This morning, Diarmuid presented a new understanding of the concept The Kingdom of God. He offered an alternative title to the Kingdom, saying that he preferred the title, The Companionship of Empowerment. The idea of companionship arises from the words of Jesus whose words, ‘I do not call you servants, but friends’ where the quality of equality is more evident than the patriarchal idea of Kingdom and Lord.
This change of title has implications for the manner in which we perceive God, Jesus and the role of the Church. The move from Empire requires a shift in our perception, and offers us a more liberating response to God, the source of our empowerment.
