Following the 2008 Chapter, the Congregational Leadership Team (CLT) visited all parts of the Congregation and witnessed inspiring examples of dedicated service, some of it with people at the margins. They recognized, too, that a fundamental change in the approach of the Congregation to its work – and to its community living – had to happen if Brothers were to respond more urgently to the cries of suffering people in our world.

The CLT took up the challenge to sketch out a new plan for the Congregation. Over a two year period, they with some consultants worked on the first draft of The Proposition in the form of 26 paragraphs. The CLT undertook another visit to each Province, District and Region of the Congregation to engage with each Brother about the plan. Every Brother had the opportunity to critique the plan and offer further suggestions and amendments. This consultative process took six months and the majority of the Brothers supported the new direction.
At this pivotal time, the CLT appointed six Brothers, the Transition Support Team (TST), to take the plan forward. It is their responsibility to live Our Way into the Future and to implement the plan by setting up 20 New Communities in identifiably poor areas in the developing world. In March 2014 the Congregation Chapter, held in Nairobi, fully endorsed the plan which became ‘Our Way into the Future’.

You’ve been walking in circles, searching.
Don’t drink by the water’s edge.
Throw yourself in.
Become the water.
Only then will your thirst end.
